Oxford Street: Health Risk For Asthmatics Diesel exhaust fumes may significantly affect people with asthma, according a ’real-life’ study performed in central London. Researchers from Imperial College London, UK, compared the effects of diesel fumes on people with mild and moderate asthma using London’s busy Oxford Street with the quieter traffic-free part of Hyde Park. The study showed walkers on Oxford Street experienced increased asthmatic symptoms, reduced lung capacity and inflammation in the lungs. Those walking in Hyde Park had some of the same problems, but to a far lesser degree, according to the findings, published in the New England Journal of Medicine.
